FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO YOU SELL YOUR MEAT AND EGGS?

We sell our meat and eggs direct from the farm near Moffat ON.  All of our items are available on a pre-order basis and require an appointment for pickup so we can have your products packaged and ready.

ARE YOU ORGANIC?

Presently, we are not certified organic, but do use organic farming methods.  We do not use synthetics on our land, and raise our animals on pasture, without the use of antibiotics or hormones.
At this point, we are choosing to spend our money on improving our farm facilites (fencing, watering systems, etc) instead of certification fees.

DO YOU DO FARM TOURS?

Not typically, especially in the off-season.  Strictly from a biosecurity standpoint, when trying to eliminate the use of antibiotics and chemicals, we need to be extremely careful to minimize health risks to our animals. The easiest way is by minimizing traffic.  When you come to pick up your order, you will see many of our animals out free-ranging and enjoying the fresh air.  Follow us on our social media channels for an inside look at our farm.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR RENT THE CHICKEN PACKAGE?

Our Rent The Chicken package is a 6 month rental that includes 2 or 4 hens, a portable coop to move around your yard, food and water dish, reference book and care instructions as well as all the feed required for the rental season.  We also offer free delivery within 80km of our farm's location and continued support (telephone, email, or in person) for the duration of your rental and beyond.

HOW MANY EGGS WILL WE GET FOR OUR RENT THE CHICKEN PACKAGE?

Our standard 2-hen package will give you about 1 dozen eggs per week.  The deluxe, 4-hen package will give you about 2 dozen eggs per week.

HOW LONG DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO LOOK AFTER MY RENTAL HENS?

Backyard chickens require care like any other pet.  Each day you will have to provide feed, fresh water, collect the eggs and move your coop to a fresh patch of grass.  This process takes roughly 10 minutes per day.  Additional time should be set aside on a weekly, or twice-weekly, basis to clean the coop.  Of course, you can spend much more time with your hens as they are fantastic pets!

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE HENS OR CHICKS AT THE END OF THE RENTAL PERIOD?

We bring them back to the farm where we expand our flock, or expand the flocks of our friends and family.  We are fortunate to live in an area surrounded with various pro-backyard chicken municipalities that can offer many hens a spoiled life!
